Join us for a walk in one of the region’s unique old forest stands. Last cut in the mid to late 1800s, the Sandy Stream Forest in Unity is a relic of the past. In recent decades scientists have learned that older forests harbor a greater diversity of species and play a vital role in overall forest health. What can we observe that suggests something different is going on here? We’ll look for the signs and clues that are indications of older forests and we’ll take some tree measurements. The Sandy Stream Forest is on land owned by the Bowsprit Foundation and 104 acres is soon to be protected as forever wild with a conservation easement held by Maine Farmland Trust. Join ecologist Aleta McKeage and Sebasticook Regional Land Trust board member Buck O’Herin for a walk into the past.  The event is August 8 at 9am. Meet on the Crosby Brook Rd behind MOFGA at the Hills to Sea Trail sign. We will carpool a short distance from there to the Sandy Stream crossing that requires easy shallow wading to get across.

Location Sandy Stream Forest, Elwell Farm Rd, Unity
